Systems Mapping
Mapping any system involves extensive research on the topic of choice. Systems are never-ending, containing micro-systems within themselves and endlessly growing. In this infographic, I explore the National Park Service and System, breaking it down into three main components: Political and Economical, Social, and Ecological. The infographic is a tiered representation of the system and mimics the layers of Earth. "Ecological" factors of national parks can be compared to the core, or the foundation of the system. From there, stems social, and then political and economic factors affecting the parks. The "Ecological" layer explores the initial movements and progression in industrialization due to the discovery of natural resources, the native flora and fauna, and the geography of parks. Following this, the "Social" layer dives into the technology, ideology, and psychology that emerges from ecology and the human love of nature. Within the last layer are the all-encompassing political and economic effects facing national parks. These are a direct result of the social and ecological factors that have been established in society throughout history. The layers of the diagram are color coded based on the air quality index, indicating areas which require immediate attention and action by not only the government, but each individual. This work shows my extensive and thorough approach to research, as well as my knowledge regarding the National Park System, its history, and how we need to advocate for change within the system.
